Freshfields has a strong reputation

When you tell people that you work at Freshfields, they'll instantly mention complex, high-profile transactions - the ones they've read about in newspapers. We're well known as being the best at what we do and our clients trust us to deliver the highest standard work - they know that they are in good hands.

I feel like I am trusted despite only being a first-year trainee

My seniors have given me responsibilities like going to client meetings and drafting board minutes. I even attended the physical signing of an M&A project, which was very interesting because it's apparently quite rare nowadays.

But, at the same time, I get very hands-on guidance. I have never felt myself solely accountable for the work that I produce - there is always an extra layer of scrutiny by my supervisor, for which I'm very grateful. I really do feel that, at Freshfields, we're learning from the best.

Studying law is different to practising law, and there are no shortcuts

When making your application, don't become fixated on including all your law-related experience.

Lots of things in life can help develop you as a person. Think of something you're really passionate about and what skills you have gained from it.

Commercial awareness is very important so do read up on current affairs - think about market trends and how these could affect our clients and our own business.

Also, don't be a 'yes' man - the interviewer wants to hear your views, not just you agreeing with whatever they say. If you are challenged, don't be afaid to justify your opinions.
