Tochukwu (TK) Egenti, Freshfields Trainee, talks about opportunities and support.

My preconceptions of Freshfields were probably slightly different to others’.

I saw the firm as being open to trying to tackle the issue of lack of diversity in the City.

As a Stephen Lawrence Scholar, the only difference I experienced to other trainees was that I already knew a few more people around the firm.

And that’s only because I had been coming in to the office for a day every two months. I’ve never felt anyone here has been treated differently because of their background.

Everyone I’ve come across during my time here has been very approachable

and always willing to spend time meeting with trainees or people on vacation schemes. Whatever I’m working on, I can always find a colleague to answer any questions.

London trainees get to volunteer at the Tower Hamlets Law Centre.

We interview people who come in and liaise with a duty solicitor to come up with their free advice. As well as being a really rewarding project, it’s good communication practice.

Partners are always very happy to organise a celebration after a big piece of work.

Whether a closing lunch or dinner, or just drinks, it’s a nice way for everyone to come together after the dust has settled, when there’s no pressure, and reflect on another success.

The social aspect extends beyond your day-to-day colleagues.

I recently went on a tour to La Manga in Spain with the Freshfields rugby team. It was a good way to get to know a wider range of people from other departments or outside of the firm. When you get back there’s a stronger bond with the people you went out there with, which makes working together a lot easier.

What does Freshfields expect of trainees?

To try everything. The whole point of a three-month seat is to give you the opportunity to see many different areas. Don’t come with pre-conceptions.

What can trainees expect of Freshfields?

Support. The work we do requires intense, sometimes long hours but you’ve got real support when you need it. Expectations are well managed and met.
