Freshfields in three words dynamic, prestigious and supportive.

Rose Pollard, Trainee

Rose Pollard, Freshfields Trainee, talks about trust, culture and the value of experience.

You’re expected to manage your own time so you can have a life outside of work.

We all have our own interests and Freshfields encourages this so that we can be balanced.

People genuinely want to spend time with each other; it’s very natural.

Our social events don’t feel forced. Everyone gets along really well so it never feels like ‘organised fun’.

Seeing something through to the end is really rewarding.

In my dispute resolution seat I helped draft a document from the absolute beginning from information sent to us by a client. I was then asked to turn it into a witness statement, which I drafted with input from associates. Seeing that go to court and watching it in action was quite amazing.

I certainly didn’t expect the level of trust that has been put in me.

Even in my first seat as a trainee I was given tasks to ‘run with’, although there were always colleagues to answer my questions.

What you do every day may already be preparing you for Freshfields.

Before you arrive try to get any sort of experience you can. Non-legal work experience can be much more valuable than you realise. For example, in my interviews I was asked a lot of questions about my work experience as a shop supervisor – any part-time job can help show that you can take on responsibility, manage yourself and deal with clients, which is what I and other trainees do on a daily basis.

I felt at home here when I visited the office,

which I put down to the variety of people that Freshfields attracts. It makes such a difference when you are working in a demanding environment. I’d advise applicants to try to meet people from firms you are interested in so you can get an idea of the culture.

What does Freshfields expect of trainees?

Dedication to the job. When you’re here you have to be fully focused and you do sometimes have to sacrifice your social life.

What can trainees expect of Freshfields?

A high quality of work and a high quality of people to work with. But also a high quality of support: the firm recognises what it demands of people and ensures you aren’t overwhelmed.
