Whether you know London well or have never set foot in the capital, it’s hard not to love living and working in one of the world’s most exciting cities.

Living and working in London

Once you’re accepted as a trainee, you’ll join a six-month legal practice course (LPC) in central London.

Our London office

Our London office is on Fleet Street, the centre of England’s legal industry since medieval times. The Royal Courts of Justice are just a short walk away, as are all four Inns of Court. We’re also close to the City, within walking distance of the entertainment districts of Covent Garden and the South Bank, and near the restaurants and pubs of Clerkenwell.

Railway stations within half-an-hour’s walk include City Thameslink, Blackfriars, Waterloo and Charing Cross. You can even commute by boat on the ‘River Bus’ – Blackfriars Pier is less than a 10-minute walk away.

Making the move to London

Once you’re accepted as a trainee, you’ll join a six-month legal practice course (LPC) in central London.

You’ll get to meet the other people in your intake, while learning some of the basics you need as a trainee – and enjoying what London has to offer.

We know that living and working in central London is expensive, so we contribute to your living expenses with a maintenance loan while you’re at law school. As well as a host of other benefits, we also offer an interest-free loan of up to £2000 when you arrive at Freshfields.

If you’ve never lived here before, moving to London can be an intimidating prospect. We can put you in touch with someone in the firm to chat about the process of making a new life here.

Anticipating the needs of our clients – and our people – is what keeps us competitive.

Settling in at Freshfields

We try to make settling in as straightforward as we can. You’ll have a two-week induction to help you find your way around. That’s also when you’ll get to know your trainee intake partner, who will be your informal mentor for the course of your training contract.

Looking forward: 100 Bishopsgate

We’re a firm with a strong heritage but we have a history of thinking ahead. Anticipating the needs of our clients – and our people – is what keeps us competitive. That’s why, in 2020, we are moving our London office from Fleet Street to 100 Bishopsgate. After nearly three decades, it marks the end of an era – and the beginning of an thrilling new chapter.

Located in the heart of the City, close to Bank, Liverpool Street and Crossrail, 100 Bishopsgate provides a fantastic location and brings us closer to some of our key clients. You’ll also have a range of amenities on your doorstep, from bars, restaurants and shops to gyms, art galleries, yoga studios and even an ice-rink. You’ll be based here during your training contract unless you’re on secondment.

We will be occupying 12 floors of the 37-storey building, with Royal Bank of Canada and global investment bank Jefferies as our co-tenants. You’ll benefit from more modern working spaces, as well as the same amenities – dedicated fitness centre, staff restaurant – we have today. There’s never been a more exciting time to join the firm!
