Every lawyer has a different reason for choosing the firm they join. Here’s why people choose us.
Work with the best people
If you aspire to handle high-stakes work for high-calibre clients, look no further. Working at Freshfields isn’t always easy and the hours can be long, but you’ll be surrounded by dedicated, supportive people who will lead by example and help you learn.
‘We do very demanding work for demanding clients, so at times it can get quite intense. But if you come here with the right attitude you’ll find that it’s also a very collaborative environment in which you can express your views and get stuck into some top-quality work.’
Do international work
Almost everything we advise on crosses international borders in some way. If you’re interested in this kind of work, Freshfields is a great place to get started. And – if you’re a native Mandarin or Korean speaker – we can even offer you a training contract split between London and one of our offices in Asia.
Be part of a team
We’re a big law firm, but you don’t need to worry about feeling lost. In each seat, you’ll be part of a relatively small team and build close links with other trainees in your intake. We strive to create a collegiate atmosphere full of friendly faces, market-leading training and the support you need to thrive.
Give something back
Everybody in the firm is encouraged to do some pro bono work, which spans all of our legal practice areas. We work for a wide range of pro bono clients from individual victims of trafficking to some of the world’s largest NGOs. Last year, our trainees were involved in over 200 pro bono projects.
In addition, we offer three trainee client secondments to Oxfam, Liberty and the Tower Hamlets Law Centre.
Join a responsible business
Responsible business sits at the heart of our firm. It aligns our diversity and inclusion aspirations with our pro bono work, community investment programmes and environmental and human rights commitments.
We consider responsible business at every decision point, from client and mandate acceptance to the impact we choose to make on the society and environment around us.
Our community investment programme focuses on social inclusion and provides volunteering opportunities with schools, social enterprises and other local projects.
Some examples of our ongoing responsible business commitments are:
- Our carbon offsetting- Reap is an initiative we are funding in East Africa to offset our carbon emissions and support 9,000 small scale farmers in the process;
- our lawyers represent asylum seekers in their appeal hearings to defend their limited right to food and shelter;
- work placements, which we offer to help people back into employment; and
- the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme, which seeks to address the disproportionate under-representation of black and black mixed race men in large commercial law firms.
