Eight reasons to choose Freshfields

Colleagues in office

Every lawyer has a different reason for choosing the firm they join. Here are eight reasons why you should choose us.

1. Experience an eight-seat training contract

You will gain experience in dispute resolution, finance and corporate and you can submit preferences for where you want to spend each three months of your training contract – or you can decide which ones as you go along, which makes it incredibly flexible. We’ll try our best to accommodate you. This means you get broader experience than you’d get at most other law firms, who typically offer just four seats of six months each.

2. Work with the best

If you aspire to do high-calibre work for high-quality clients, look no further. Working for Freshfields isn’t always easy and the hours are sometimes long – but you’ll be surrounded by dedicated, supportive and ambitious people, who’ll lead by example and help you learn.

3. Do international work

Almost everything we advise on crosses international borders in some way.

So if you’re interested in this kind of work, Freshfields in London is an excellent place at which to start your legal career.

And if you’re a native Mandarin or Korean speaker, we can even offer you a training contract split between London and one of our offices in Asia.

4. Feel part of a team

We’re a big law firm, but you don’t need to worry about getting lost. In each seat, you’ll be part of a relatively small team and build close links with the 40 or so other trainees in your intake. We strive to create a friendly, collegiate atmosphere with market-leading training and the support you need to thrive.

5. Give something back

We encourage our people to devote time to community and pro bono work.

Our community investment programme focuses on social inclusion and provides volunteering opportunities with schools, social enterprises and other local projects.

Our pro bono work ranges from acting for victims of trafficking to large NGO reorganisations. Last year our trainees were involved in more than 200 pro bono projects.

In addition we offer secondments to Oxfam, Liberty and the Tower Hamlets Law Centre. Whichever seat you’re in, there are opportunities to get involved in ongoing matters.

6. Join a responsible business

We integrate responsible business practices into everything we do – from our client and mandate acceptance decisions to our impact on the environment and society in which we operate.

For example:

  • our low-carbon group has helped clients meet their climate change goals;
  • we have offered work placements to help people back into employment; and
  • the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme seeks to address the disproportionate under-representation of black and black mixed race men in large commercial law firms.

7. Get high-quality training

From legal training to personal management skills to one-on-one mentoring and coaching, we offer a wealth of guidance and advice throughout your training contract – and beyond.

You’ll also be doing things over the two years that will help give our clients value for money.

How so? With sites in Manchester, Frankfurt and Hong Kong, our Legal Services Centre has dedicated teams of legal support assistants who can do more of the process-heavy types of client work – so you don’t have to!

8. Be rewarded for your hard work

Our salary and benefits package is competitive. We’ll pay you £43,000 as a trainee in your first year, rising to £48,000 in your second year and £85,000 if you stay with us as a newly qualified lawyer.
