Alex Potts, Trainee

Alex Potts, Freshfields trainee, talks about the people, the training and his non-law background.

Before I joined Freshfields I saw it as opaque and quite intimidating.

That was a fundamental misconception because everyone here is so friendly and welcoming.

I come from a completely non-law background having studied Spanish and Chinese at Nottingham.

Once you’re here there’s really no difference: you could line up all of our lawyers and no-one would be able to pick out who had done law at university and who hadn’t. Not having any friends going into law and not having any connections to this world was no obstacle for me – you really form a bond with your colleagues here.

When the World Cup was on, one of the partners set a room aside to watch the football.

Everyone at all levels came together to see the opening match with a few drinks, which was great fun. Lots of lasting friendships are formed within the firm.

The best thing about working here is the people.

There are times when you are doing long hours and it can be tough, so you really rely on your colleagues. It can be exciting working on a big deal, but for me it’s the people alongside you who really make it great.

There’s no ‘Freshfields type’ but I do think there are shared values.

I suppose we take work seriously but we don’t take ourselves seriously. In intense periods of work, we’re all there in the trenches mucking in, trainees, associates and partners alike.

I’ve done some pro bono work for the the Tower Hamlets Law Centre, which was really rewarding.

It was the first time I’ve done anything ‘hands-on’ with the law. You get to go and actually ask the questions and think about how you apply the law to someone’s specific problem. You get facetime with the client and, yes, it can sometimes be emotionally draining – but the answers you give are really helping the people who need it most.

What does Freshfields expect of trainees?

Enthusiasm and a very high quality of work. It’s not just turning up and getting your head down – it’s about being part of the team, engaging with the people around you.

What can trainees expect of Freshfields?

Really great training, the chance to work with the absolute leaders in the field doing some of the most exciting, big-name stuff around and a great team around you. Whatever happens in your career, I think Freshfields is an incredible place to grow and learn.
